Grove Cemetery

Grove United Methodist Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in the Grove Historic District, a nationally certified historic district.

The Grove Cemetery is a non-profit and our price structure is designed to cover the costs of burial and cemetery upkeep. The board members are volunteers who do not draw a salary. We keep all revenue in excess of our costs in a perpetual care fund, which we use only toward the upkeep of the cemetery.

Grove Cemetery has been operating for nearly two hundred and fifty years. There is still space available for both full interments and urn internments.

History

The oldest grave in the Cemetery is marked 1776. The Cemetery’s history is closely tied to that of Grove Methodist Church. George Hoffman, who died in 1829, and Mary Eve Hoffman, who died in 1821, owned the property on which the present Grove United Methodist Church and Cemetery stand. They are both buried in the historic section of the Cemetery.

Because of World War II, the church had very few members and the church’s future was uncertain. Therefore, the Cemetery was spun off into a separate non-profit cemetery corporation and The Grove Methodist Cemetery was incorporated on August 18, 1944.

After the war, the second parking lot was made and burial lots in the new section were purchased. Then, in the late 1950’s the Board added paved roads throughout the Cemetery.

A Cremation Garden was added in 2004 to accommodate the increased demand for smaller plots for interments.

For nearly two and half centuries, Grove Methodist Cemetery has been the last resting place for members of the Grove Community, including many church leaders and veterans.
